There's a picture book about this! Just a Minute by Yuyi Morales. Death comes for Grandma but she cons him into helping her make dinner and then invites him to her birthday party. He has such a good time that he leaves...but says he'll be back next year.
I especially love when older kids realize that Señor Calavera is actually Death.
