Story time: while digging a hole for a cute ponytail palm my wife an I were planting. We found this coffee can. Wore some gloves because I figured it was someone’s pet. It was wrapped in 10 plastic grocery bags, which set off alarm bells. Had the sheriff come an pick it up. They ran the address and said it’s most likely tied to a homocide a previous resident was convicted of. A week or two later while chatting with my lawn guy(he worked for the previous owners) and he says the previous guy was always digging in the back yard. Borrowing a friends metal detector this weekend. Wish me luck!

Mini update:

Wife googled names of peoples mail that still gets sent here and pretty confident she found the guy.

Edit: removed link due to not being 100% that the person is the one responsible

2nd mini update: Wow this blew up! I will update this weekend if I find anything or not. If I do I’ll start a new post. To answer some questions. It was just the gun and a empty magazine. Gloves were on the entire time. I haven’t heard any new info from the sheriff. They photographed the entire area, and took everything related.

Fairly unrelated but still interesting:

Went gold mining with my grandfather. We were up in the Sierra Nevada area. Walking along a random road near where there was a mining operation in the 19th century. We hit a large beep with his metal detector. I expected to find some coins, like old dimes or nickels. We had buckets of them that we'd found from previous summers. I dug about 4 feet and all we found was a large (about 6") clump of rusted metal. A few years later I found it and got curious. We ran it through an water electrolysis system to remove the rust and had it looked at by a local antique dealer, who said it was an old revolver. The barrel had been so badly damaged it was hardly recognizable. I scrambled with my grandfather in his last 4 months of life to remember what road we had taken and the route to find what was buried beneath the revolver. Prospectors were known to bury revolvers on top of their gold stashes in case they were held at gun point to dig them up. My grandfather passed away and I still haven't been able to find the road we went down.
