What made crysis graphics so special that it made it a meme for graphic benchmarks?

When I played Crysis 3 on my Xbox 360, the grass was way too much for it so all the audio would turn into loud static until I left the area and there was no more grass.

I just played Crysis 3 on my GTX 2060 Super. That game is beautiful, and the physics are pretty great.
