Sad story about the fate of Dave of Dave's Killer Bread fame, he essentially had a mental breakdown: https://www.theringer.com/2018/2/27/17055800/daves-killer-bread-dave-dahl-feature

Basically, the board ousted him from his own company so they could focus on growth and profits, against his mission and vision for the bread company.

Met him in 2009, too, handing out samples of his own bread in Portland. The passion just oozed from him. It was also softer bread at the time, it's gotten a little harder/more shelf stable since then imo. Still the best bread around, though, and truthfully I'm happy I can get it most grocers/Costco.

Fun fact: The marketing for this bread company may lead you to believe it is a small, artisan operation, but it is actually now owned by Flowers Foods, the same massive corporation that owns Sunbeam, Wonder Bread, Butternut, Bunny, Nature’s Own, Home Pride and many other widely distributed breads.
