He was born a slave in 1812 but eventually got he's freedom and after the civil war he started a town named kincheonville (named after him, thomas kincheon) for free black people but not only for black people. It also had anglo and mexican settlers and the land was around 300 acres.
It’s likelier this picture was taken maybe in the 1850s or 1860s. In the 1840s photography would have been in its infancy and very rare to be photographed. Not impossible though. But bowler hats weren’t invented until 1849 and popularized in the US until the 1850s (this second bit about bowler hats I had to google).
Awesome picture though. I wish I had an ancestor’s picture dating that far back.
