My ex wife and I did something similar as a locket for our son. He’s only 10, and doesn’t wear necklaces, but we did it as a gesture. Took 3 stones out of her old engagement ring to show that no matter what he goes through, we are still a team of 3 for him. We really wanted him to know that we are always a family, even if it’s not considered “normal”. The locket was really just symbolic, but he keeps it on his desk at my house. She has since remarried and given our son a baby brother. My son’s stepfather and his family are honestly more than I could’ve ever wished for. They treat my son like he is one of their own, and more than once that thought has made me cry. We still do family dinner and movie nights once or twice a month at their house, and I’m warmly welcomed by all. Going through the divorce, being a product of divorced parents, I worried about my son more than anything. It’s been about 5 years, and I’m pretty proud to say we have so far succeeded in making sure he knows that our love never stopped for him.

I kept the diamond from my mom’s engagement ring from her second husband. She sold the ring itself back when everyone was selling every scrap of metal they could get to those “cash 4 gold” places. The diamond is microscopic and came from Walmart in the early 90’s. I put it away and meant to have a necklace made out of it for my half sister, to remind her that good things can come from dark times, but she grew up to be a lying stealing little shit so I’ll just give her the diamond later I guess.
