Just bought our dream home less than 2 months ago. Tonight I watched it burn to the ground in a massive wildfire.

Im assuming your insurance is going to rebuild it.

I have some future advice as someone who lost his home to a fire: Watch your contractor like a hawk. Im sure there are good and bad ones but I hired a major disaster restoration company, one of the biggest in the country, to rebuild mine. They basically wanted me to sign a doc that said "we will rebuild your house". That's it. No drawings, no specs, no parameters, no timeframe, nothing.

I said 'no friggin' way' and I went and drew the scale drawings for how I wanted the finished house to look. Damn good thing I did, cause even WITH the blueprints the contractor tried to change several of the things we agreed on. It was ridiculous because he'd build things the way HE wanted and then expected me to just be ok with that, even though it didn't look anything like what we'd agreed on in the drawings.

Just watch him like a hawk and dont accept 'good enough' as good enough. Make them do what you want them to do - in the end you have to sign off on their work anyway and they dont get paid til youre happy.

ps. Sorry about your house. Fires suck.
