if you find a chill club, fencing can be really zen and fun.

It's chess with muscles, but competitive sport fencing is like card counting meets craps. I prefer finding clubs so you can just vibe and casually play the game with other people who are there for enjoyment and not winning.

Its really fun. Who hasn't played with sticks as kids? Same exact thing except you're not a stupid kid and you can afford some cool gear and grasp bigger concepts that add to the immense fun thwacking people with sticks while they try to thwack you.

You can go in for a very heated, exhausting and expressive bout or take it as slow and methodical as you want. Its a bit of both and its like dancing. You respond to your opponent and they respond to you. Its a very aerobic and high intensity activity in training and practice. You'll learn to be nimble on your feet and you'll improve your hand/eye coordination. Practice your left and right equally because its really rewarding to see your weak side improve. Your arms will look great. Legs too. Get into a habit of regularly stretching.

Use the entire blade, focus on footwork, be first, and you get 2 good chances with a technique. Pretty much the best advice I can give.

edit: Awesome replies! If ya'll try fencing, please don't be dissuaded with a poor culture fit. This sport draws all kinds of people and you'll have to shop around to find what fits you interests best. Getting a friend involved is a great idea too! Its skill you'll learn and develop that will grow into your own style and flavor.
