As an airline pilot, I kind of have this map already engrained in my head. Sounds weird, but it's true.

This is the best representation of that mental map I've ever seen.

The northeast is nothing but lights from about Richmond northeastbound until Boston.

South Florida is dense city until you hit swamp. Then there's Orlando. Tampa. Jacksonville.

The midwest has reliable, almost mathematically spaced cities until you get to Kansas City, then you're on your own until Denver.

West of Denver there are precious few major cities (Salt Lake) until you hit the coastal states. Then of course the West Coast is dense.
