I'm a lower limb trauma amputee and ger asked to work with new amoitees to help get them started in the right direction and show them their life is not over because I live a full life as a race car driver and business owner. Without question, people with a sense of humor about it do well. Those with no sense of humor about it do not.

I believe this is 2 fold. One, because no matter what you will have bad days and the laughter will help get through them. But most importantly, it shows that you are in control of it and it is not in control of you. If you can't joke about it than this situation is in control of you and you are at its mercy. It will show you none.

My mom lost her leg from infection. She had a great sense of humor about it though. It was below her knee so she would refer to her stump as her “flipper”. She also loved to tell kids on the city bus crazy stories about how she lost her leg. Sometimes it was from a shark attack, other times it was from a battle with an alligator. She would joke about how she was gonna work at IHOP because “ I hop”. She somehow never let her missing leg affect the last years of her life. RIP mom, you were a trip.
