Oh man, I read the book "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" that followed the lives of 2 girls in early China who went through foot binding. Such an excruciating thing to go through. Even worse, historically it was the girl's own mothers who bound their feet and made them walk on them until the bones broke how they wanted.
The perfect "lotus foot" was one that was 3 inches in length.
