This reminds me of that time a Japanese kid tried to ask Christiano Ronaldo a question in Portuguese and, as he struggled through it, the crowd started laughing. Ronaldo stopped and asked 'why are they smiling?' and said they should be happy because he tried. We should always encourage people to learn about other cultures!
I speak a little chinese(enough to ask if someone needs help, ask how they are, and make fun of people). It’s never been really useful until I was on a plane, and the elderly woman in the seat next to me couldn’t get her bag into the overhead storage. I looked over and said, “hi my name is ***. Can I help you?” Her face lit up and we chatted a little and she thanked me, and complimented my speaking. I think it made both of our days honestly. She spent the rest of the flight happy to have someone to talk to, who not only didn’t mind that her English wasn’t the best.
Side rant. If you can tell that someone might want to talk but is self conscious of their language, please encourage them. Talk a little, speak clearly. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. YELLING DOES NOT MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND BETTER.
