Mercedes: l'uomo squadra Bottas sarà confermato per il 2021
Stando alle informazioni raccolte da Motorsport.com, Mercedes punterà sulla stabilità e confermerà Bottas per il 2021. Decisiva l'ottima partenza di stagione 2020 e la pandemia da COVID-19, che di fatto ha beffato George Russell.
Valtteri Bottas è ormai abituato a conquistarsi sul campo il rinnovo di contratto per la stagione successiva. Il finlandese compirà 31 anni il prossimo mese di agosto, e da quando corre in monoposto il regalo più gradito è sempre stato la firma sul contratto che certifica i suoi impegni per l’anno che verrà.
Secondo informazioni raccolte lo scorso weekend a Spielberg, per Bottas è pronta la strenna più gradita, ovvero il quarto rinnovo consecutivo con la Mercedes, che lo conferma nel team anche per il Mondiale 2021.
Un dono tutt’altro che scontato, visto che ad inizio stagione i piani del team campione del Mondo sembravano indirizzati verso la promozione nel team di George Russell, cresciuto nel vivaio Mercedes e ormai pronto al grande salto. A cambiare le carte in tavola è stato l’intreccio di molte situazioni diverse tra loro, che hanno portato i vertici della Mercedes a spingere per il rinnovo del finlandese.
Lo stop di quattro mesi del Mondiale 2020 non ha giocato a favore di Russell, che ha perso l’opportunità di mettere fieno in cascina con potenziali exploit al volante della Williams, ed il via della stagione prolungato fino al mese di luglio ha giocato a favore della stabilità. L’ottimo inizio di stagione di Bottas ha giocato a favore della finlandese, Valtteri ha molti estimatori in Mercedes, ed è facile ipotizzare che non sarebbe stato elegante mettere alla porta un pilota dopo 4 anni in cui si è confermato uomo-squadra.
A giocare un ruolo importante è stata anche la decisione maturata dalla Renault di legarsi a Fernando Alonso, accordo che ha chiuso una porta che avrebbe potuto offrire a Bottas una valida alternativa. Tra il rischio di stroncare la carriera di un pilota a cui Mercedes è molto legata e il dover mantenere Russell in Williams anche nel 2021, il team campione del Mondo ha scelto la seconda opzione, che di fatto permetterà alla squadra di far proseguire il programma di crescita di Russell in attesa di un suo coinvolgimento nel 2022.
Il tutto con l’opinione favorevole di Lewis Hamilton, che non ha mai nascosto di vedere in Bottas un compagno di squadra leale con cui dividere il box. Il prossimo passo che attende Toto Wolff è la conferma di Hamilton e di…se stesso, due passaggi che metteranno le basi per il futuro Mercedes anche oltre il 2021.
