As a Landlord, this is actually not a bad thing or idea. If you view renting to someone as a business partnership and are upfront in discussing the rental it usually works out much better. tennant stay longer, pay is more regular and if they have issues or problems they are more open to discuss a solution.
When I was newly married right after college, my new wife and I moved to a different state so I could go to grad school. The manager of an apartment complex we applied to asked for a letter of recommendation from our former city’s mayor. I tried to explain that no, I wasn’t on a first name basis with the mayor of a city of over half a million people.
