For those interested, the gin and tonic has a fun backstory as well. Tonic water naturally contains quinine, which moderates the effects of malaria on the body. It was one of the first medicines to have an effect, and so colonial forces in Africa were given quinine water (tonic water) as a ration. The only thing is tonic water tastes disgusting alone, so British soldiers got in the habit of mixing in their gin ration to make it more palatable, and sometimes even adding the limes they received while aboard ships to prevent scurvy. Hence, lime is the standard garnish for a G&T.
