Interesting enough, NASA was founded when there were only 48 states.
It's incredible to think they were in the process of designing the Saturn 1 there were only 48 stars on that flag.
Edit: because so many people are confused by my comment. The last states to enter where Alaska and Hawaii in 1959, they didn't launch the Saturn family till the 1960s.
