Fun fact: America's National Speed Limit of 55 mph was implemented as a result of the OPEC oil embargo in the late 70's (with its roots as mentioned below during WWII and the Nixon years). It was reasoned lowering the speed limit would conserve gas, and lower demand, which it did temporarily. This ignited a populist revolution against government control and kicked off such cultural unintended consequences as the Smokey and the Bandit franchise, the Cannonball Run franchise, CB culture, Fuzz Busters, and so on.
