For a lot of people that had nothing to do with the innocent victims. It stung their pride that their country had been attacked. They took it personally, and that’s why it mattered so much to them. Just look at how 1st responders and other victims have had to fight so hard to get healthcare for the injuries they suffered that day. For many, many, people, 9/11 was never about others

I have a cousin who was born the week before 9/11/01. Everybody in the family was happy when she was born, but it became somber and everyone had other 9/11 related things to discuss afterwards. This year, her entire graduation was canceled, which was a big deal because most of that side of my family barely graduate high school, and her 2 older siblings were both dropouts. We were all so excited and happy for her. It’s so odd to think that during her entire existence, there has been one catastrophe after another that overshadows her milestones. Strange time to have been born.

Edit: I’m well aware of how lucky we are to live in 2020 and how worse it has been in the past. I don’t mean to compare it to any experience or time era except for maybe my own, just sharing a story.

Edit2: also know that we are spoiled Americans.

I hate to say this, but I have become so fucking numb from the constant news cycle.Death this, disaster that, violence here there and everywhere. We used to only have news from our own region, and things occurring on the other side of the globe would be a small column in the "world" section of the newspaper. Now... The combined ills of the world have been carefully packaged to be rammed down our throats in every medium.

Its embarrassing to admit, but I just don't have any the energy to express care/outrage anymore. Even knowing these are real people with real lives, its shameful but there is just too much in our faces. I don't know if others feel the same way, but my cup is full and I the next disaster is just going to have to wait.
