I’m remembering that they initially made prosthetics for Azog and Bolg and the goblins, but it wasn’t working as stunt actors were overheating during filming. They ended up removing their masks so they had to do CG. And ultimately they redesigned azog. The original Azog design is used in film 3 before the white council arrives. Conan Stevens was hired for the role in prosthetics but was replaced. Ultimately I agree, good makeup looks better, but it does restrict you to a human shape, going cg you can design without constraints.

It depends: imagine if Davy Jones wasn't CGI
