What is it about Germany that it is able to be so successful, not just now but historically as well?

They were in a poor place economically after the 1st and 2nd world wars. They have only been a unified country for under 30 years. East Germany at the time was hardly prosperous.

What is their secret?

In at least half the regions the GDP seems to more or less correspond to population, rather than some unique German efficiency.

GERMANY: 83 million

UK + Ireland + Netherlands + Iceland: 87.5 million

France + Belgium, Luxembourg + Switzerland: 87 million
