The reason he did this because his wife died. She couldn't make it to the hospital due to long distance. So he didnt wanted anyone to go through it.

Manjhi's wife Falguni Devi was badly injured and died because she fell from the mountain and the nearest town with a doctor was 55 km away. He carved the path because she died.
