We had our house broken into by a couple guys with guns and were beaten to a bloody pulp. They stole a bunch of stuff including my roommates video games which he had written his first and last name on the inside of every case. We found his games at Gamestop so we followed up with the cops and they told us they had no interest in looking into it. We did their job for them and they still couldn't be bothered with tracking down these violent criminals.
Edit: it's sad but also not at all surprising how many people have similar stories. Cops are fucking worthless.
I tell this story a lot, but a very large local charity for kids had a shitload of auction items stolen after the auction was completed as well as the local A/V guy's truck getting ransacked for well over a million dollars worth of stolen goods. When the A/V owner showed detectives that they'd located their gear by serial number on OfferUp, detectives refused to set up a meeting with the seller because that "wasn't sufficient evidence for a warrant."
So when cop apologists are like "What are you gonna do when murderers and thieves come around when you defund the police idiot?" I just note it'll be basically exactly the same as it is now, except a guy in a uniform doesn't shoot my dog.
