De NOS en Het Nieuwsblad hebben een promotiebrochure voor de BeNeLiga kunnen inkijken. Daarin hunkeren de initiatiefnemers naar Europees succes voor Belgische en Nederlandse clubs.

"Na 150 jaar voetbal is het tijd om onze toekomst opnieuw te beoordelen. Het laatste zilverwerk dateert alweer van zo'n twintig jaar terug. De fans verlangen naar Europese glorie", staat erin te lezen.

De BeNeLiga moet het gat met de Europese topcompetities toerijden. De Belgische en Nederlandse clubs dromen ervan om nummer 6 te worden in Europa: na Engeland, Duitsland, Spanje, Italiƫ en Frankrijk.

Op de ontwerptafel ligt een competitie met 8 Belgische en 10 Nederlandse clubs. Zij nemen het tegen mekaar op in een klassieke formule met 34 speeldagen, zonder play-offs. Namen van de 18 clubs zijn nog niet bekend.

De clubs die niet in de BeNeLiga aan de bak komen, spelen dan weer een nationale competitie.

It's an intriguing idea and based on the comments here, there's a lot of arguments for and against. I think it really comes down to whether the survival of the smaller clubs can be guaranteed, because it would definitely be a tragedy for a lot of clubs to cease to exist just for this idea to be put in place.

Forever against this. It might help the big clubs but a lot of the smaller clubs with years and years of history will go under. The reason football is so big in the Netherlands is because of these clubs, big and small.
