Bubonic plague still exists throughout the world. I saw a sign in Yellowstone Nat Park (USA) that said not to feed or interact with the local squirrels or rodents because they have been found to carry "Plague".
Bubonic Plague took centuries to finally be controlled. The last major outbreak was in the year 1720 when Marseilles saw ~100,000 people die due to the city council circumventing a quarantine for a cargo ship.

The bubonic plague still exists today and it is treated with antibiotics not a vaccine.
