These numbers are based on 7592 attempts in the game You Still Don't Know Africa that I built (which challenges you to name as many African countries as you can). Players are from 124 countries worldwide. The numbers are obviously not representative for a general public, mainly because people who self-select to play such a game are probably more likely to know a good amount of African countries.

Web version and more stats here. (including the number of people who think Nambia and Wakanda exist...)

Tools used: A Firebase database to log each guess entered by users into a JSON file. Javascript to crunch the numbers and HTML, JS, CSS to create the graphic (basically just a styled table).

If you're wondering about the * next to «Congo»: If you enter «Congo», the game assumes you mean the DRC (just like Google does). «Congo» in the stats includes all variations of DRC, but not of the «Republic of the Congo». This explains why «Congo» ranks quite high and the more specific «Republic of the Congo» quite low.

Edit:

A lot of you are asking about countries with names in different languages like Cote d'Ivoire / Ivory Coast or old and new names like Eswatini / Swaziland. The way the game handles this is by accepting a number of variations for each country. All of those are considered correct for the graphic. So Eswatini 20% means that 20% of attempts included Eswatini or Swaziland or Kingdom of Eswatini. sound-bagel had the idea to check how many non-African countries were falsely guessed. I'll try to get those numbers, too. I'll post the raw data later today. Lots of people playing the game right now (because...Reddit) so we'll have an even larger sample a couple hours from now. Also, if you're not just into names, but also the geography of African countries, try this game.
