I mean it is kinda horryfing if you Think about it. Zuko may have considered the idea of dying while trying to capture the Avatar a better option than living a dishonored life.
It would Also explain also why he didn't hesitate fighting against Katara in the North Pole: it could have been more desperation than stupidity or arrogance.
Wasn't Zuko assuming a 100 year old Avatar wouldn't be in tip top shape though? He was surprised that Aang was so agile for his "age" when seen from afar.
Also, literally in the first episode Zuko is demanding Iroh teach him the advanced fire bending techniques, and Irohs response is basically "you still need to work on your basics."
So, hes got like a looooooong way to go before fighting a fully trained avatar wouldn't be a rofl-stomp.
