Here’s the rub:

Six years ago this scenario played out with Freddie Gray. A black man was arrested and received injuries to his spine. He died in their custody.

Since then, several largely peaceful protests against police brutality have occurred. They received disproportionate backlash. This includes the Baltimore protest and Kaepernick taking a knee.

Then in September last year, Byron Williams died under the exact same circumstances. He told police he couldn’t breathe. He died.

Police reform was promised in the form of bodycams, which they can just turn off, and other underwhelming policies.

Now, a man was arrested for petty forgery and told the police that he can’t breathe. He died.

The definition of insanity is taking the same action over and over again and expecting a different result. Naturally, the protesters upped the ante. They had to riot in order to get their message across and effect actual change.

Edit: Obviously there has been a lot of other police brutality going on which has fueled this, but the fact that it’s the same exact scenario is unbelievable to me.

It is as necessary for me to be as vigorous in condemning the conditions which cause persons to feel that they must engage in riotous activities as it is for me to condemn riots. I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots. But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard.
