To me, it's not a question of performance, it's more a matter of what you can do with it.
You can only play games on a console (and I believe also listening to music, browsing internet, among a few other things), while you can do more or less anything using a PC: 3D CGI, digital painting, music creation, it's just much more versatile.
Furthermore, I'd be frustrated if I couldn't build my own work/gaming station. Some people just want to plug and play and don't want to get through the building process, which is a thing I perfectly understand, but I'm not part of these people.

I love PCs versatility but damn it hurts when a graphics card upgrade costs as much as the entire console package .
