Traveled extensively as an American with other Americans. This doesn’t really mirror my personal experience. I’ve found that more often than not (in Europe, anyway), you can’t really even try to speak the language of the country you’re in without the person immediately switching to English for the remainder of the conversation. Super convenient, but dissapointing if you’ve been practicing before your trip. I did have a full on conversation in Russian with my cab driver on the way back to my hotel in Prague. Literally the only time I got to use it, and I wasn’t even in Russia.

Visiting no. Living in the country, learn the language. That applies to Americans Living abroad as well.
