Thing is, when Americans think of eating beans/baked beans in general, the majority think about barbecue (BBQ) baked beans, rather than beans in tomato sauce like the Brits eat with toast. Two totally different flavors (and consistencies, to an extent), so it makes sense why the whole "beans on toast" thing is baffling to Americans. Which is funny, because Americans almost already do know what British beans on toast are like: dipping toast (or grilled cheese) into tomato soup is a common thing in America. I imagine the separation between the two isn't so large. This is a case of two different cultures thinking they're talking about the same thing, when they are not.
