That is most likely a bald faced hornets nest! Sucks it was on your house, because ecologically speaking they're nice pollinators and they also keep other more annoying bugs away.
Be sure to keep an eye out for ground burrowing yellow jackets now. Those hornets eat yellow jackets and keep them at bay. Since you've had it removed, watch your toes.
