I'm not sure what the facepalm is here. That's Oliver North. He has been famous since the 80s, when, yes he was involved in selling weapons to the Khomeni regime of Iran.
But, that really wasn't the scandal.
He was a member of the NSC. He claims that he sold defective crap to Iran then diverted the funds from the deal to fund the Contras - Nicaragua's resistance.
Further, deal with Iran was part of a larger plan to gain the release of 7 American hostages.
North has had his own TV and radio shows. His fame began when, testifying before Congress he called the entire scheme a, "...neat idea..."
Governments is full of shady stuff happening all the time. There are probably few who are more of an expert of how things work behind the scenes.
I may be older than most, but I sincerely doubt that this slipped past anybody. Everyone knows who he is.
