This reminds me of the story of Sir Ian McKellen, during the filming of either a LoTR or The Hobbit. He was brought to tears because he had to act out a scene without anyone present. It was hard on him. He is a very old school actor, and to have to act with no one there, as the hobbits were added with CGI, it was tough on him.
