The fund will continue to collect donations and disburse need-based aid through April 30. “The Art-House America Campaign aims to provide financial relief to struggling independent cinemas across the country so they can pay staff and their essential bills and survive until it is safe to reopen their doors,” the GoFundMe page reads. Essential payments include those for payroll, insurance, rent, non deferrable loans, utilities, fundraising, and mortgages.

The fund was seeded with an initial donation of $50,000 from the Criterion Channel and Janus Films. Thousand of donors then pitched in to bring the campaign closer to its goal. On April 21, the fund was given a massive injection of $75,000 courtesy of Netflix, bringing the campaign to within 90% of its fundraising target.

To date, two separate disbursements of funds have been allocated to qualifying independent theaters. Those theaters include the following:

I feel like a lot of film goers are burnt out by lifeless, stale experience that chain theaters now provide, Because of this a good amount of people seem to be harboring anti theater sentiment with the backdrop of COVID-19 and more convenient streaming providing new options to the cinema.

To those who feel that I strongly implore you to check out your local independent or arthouse cinima. They often provide the traditional theater experience that we have come to love and from the people I have met are very passionate about what they exhibit and sell.

After reading some of the quotes from the theaters I might be getting something in my eye...

“Thank you for shining a light on our little theater in the middle of America and supporting us in these difficult times. It is in this moment in history that we all see our World is much smaller and closer than we ever imagined. Love to all the great movie houses fighting the good fight to keep the experience, conversation, and community alive!” —The World Theatre, Kearney, NE

This is awesome. Props to Criterion for helping to set it up. I've actually been to one of the theaters signed up.

I just gave $20. Every bit helps and I'm really hoping some of my favorite indie theaters don't close. Thanks for sharing OP.
