I live in a managed apartment building in Cambridge MA. It’s considered brand new construction and “luxury”. I pay too much, but I can’t even remotely afford to buy a car or home within an hour of my office, the location is awesome, and we normally get access to pool, gym, movie theater, social function room, etc... Naturally, all are closed now. :(

Guess what? April first, I receive an email from the apartment management company - “sorry times are hard. Let us know if you have difficulties right now.”

I respond: “My fiancé was laid off and my salary was reduced, work considering laying me off too.”

“So sorry to hear that. Times truly are a challenge. Just a reminder that your rent is due. Also, we won’t give you a discount.”

... okay, awesome. Thanks.

Edit: wow, this got quite a bit of attention! Really appreciate some of the helpful comments and direct messages e.g. look at your lease to see if amenities are mentioned - if so, negotiate rent reduction based on unavailability of stated lease terms.

To those who offered less helpful comments e.g. don’t live somewhere you can’t afford. - maybe my post wasn’t clear. I wasn’t saying I shouldn’t have to pay rent. I was spotlighting that the building management reached out to every tenant to acknowledge that times are tough, and to connect with them if we’re experiencing difficulty. Then, when I did so, they said they wouldn’t reduce rent payments. So it seemed odd of them to reach out in the first place...

I lost my job and I let my landlord know ASAP because i couldn’t make rent this month. I can’t get back into the country because I’m not a citizen. So I’m paying rent for an apartment I can’t even live in.

I have no idea what to do. My landlord won’t let me move out because my things are inside. Apparently the borders will be closed until December so I’m stuck in another country at the moment with no job and no apartment.

I can’t afford to pay rent on a new apartment where I am now because I have to pay rent on an empty apartment in a country I can’t enter.

My landlord is hassling me to pay rent, but I can’t because I am literally unemployed and homeless on the other side of the planet.

Ahh such a mess.

My landlord offered to let me pay my April rent in two installments, one on the first and another on the 15th. With a $50 "admin fee" on both payments. So basically he offered to let me raise my rent by $100. What a gem.
