Pharmaceutical companies do this in America because they can. American regulations allow them to price virtually as they wish. Two of the three biggest insulin makers in America are not American companies, but rather European; Danish (Novo Nordisk) and French (Sanofi). They obviously do not behave like this “at home”. I imagine that they would if they could, as they make nearly all of their money off the US market so selling high is lucrative. They can’t make as much money in Europe since regulations and socialized health prevent them.

Imagine paying 435 dollars a month just for health insurance because you make approximately 1400 a month. Your insurance doesn’t kick in until you pay the 1100 dollar deductible which can take months. So you pay 435 dollars a month for health insurance, the cost of my insulin for a month is very close to 1000 dollars, and my insulin pump supplies are 1000 dollars every 3 months. Imagine working full time just so you don’t die. Imagine getting infections when you’re close to running out of pump supplies because you try not to use the insulin in your pump as much so your infusion set lasts a day or two longer till you get more. Being a type 1 diabetic is terrible. And you know what, being someone who misses paying their bills to survive sucks no matter the situation. Big Pharma really is disappointing not just for type 1 diabetics, but for everyone who relies on medications to survive or function.

They put a six inch knife in your back, take it out three inches and act all benevolent.
