Doctors don't routinely do venipuncture for lab work or IVs. Specially trained doctors will cannulate large veins in the neck or groin as well as arteries in the ICU but most primary care doctors haven't touched a needle in years.

Those things don't work for shit. They're good for beginners because all they do is make already good veins easier to see. They don't make hard veins or hard stick patients any easier.

They don't work at all on people with dark skin.

Poking the portion of the wrist pictured is cruel and unusual punishment (it hurts!)

I don't work with kids but my understanding is that these are primarily most effective and most used for babies and small kids.

RN here. We call it a vein finder. In the hospital I work in we have these on every floor and nurses use them. They are okay but they look cooler than they actually work. Depth isn't shown either and if the patient has tattoos or scars its absolutely useless. Its used if weve tried multiple sticks as a last ditch effort before requesting our Picc nurse or Ultrasound nurse/er resident or medics to try. Ultrasound is the go to for dificult sticks.

Also, hopefully this photo is just for show or its an abg getting done because sticking for veins on the wrist hurts like hell for people.
