We still get asked to design these into large bespoke houses for our wealthier clients. I kinda like them.

Edit: I'm UK based so I don't know about US code but we would have to specify a wall or railing at drops over 600mm I think.

My elementary school library had one, it was a triangle and probably 3 to 4 feet deep. I don't remember using it a whole lot, but I always enjoyed the fact that my library had a big hole in the floor. So fast forward 30 years and my son goes to the same school. Last school year they were doing a blood drive, and for each person a student got to give blood they got tickets to enter a raffle. So I agreed to go, and he want with me.

The whole affair was in the library. So I'm looking all around and it looks mostly the same. They closed off a lot of doors, and put in windows, nothing major, but the triangular reading nook was covered up. The area it was in was still there, but instead of a hole, it was just industrial carpet.

When I got done giving blood I walked over to where the hole was and slammed my foot down to see if they used wood or filled the giant hole in with cement. It turned out they just used wood so it sounded like slamming your foot down in a house, but my son had no idea that was going to happen. He thought I discovered an underground bunker or something and for the rest of the day he was asking me how I knew to go to that exact spot to slam my foot down. I finally told him, but it was pretty funny while I had him on the hook.
