Just to clarify, this is a U.S. based post, and it is very accurate.
Prior to the 1980 "Moral Majority" movement, most protestant churches in the U.S. viewed preaching about political issues or laws as distasteful. (you know, the whole separation of church and state thing.)
With the rise of assholes like Jerry Falwell however, evangelicals decided that they needed to flex as much political influence as possible and foster an "us vs them" mentality among their congregants.
Churches preaching that Jesus would be an NRA supporting Republican, and either implicitly or directly telling people how "good christians" should vote, is now so common that instead of questioning the ideals of the separation of church and state, people now have the "this must be how it always was" mentality, and think religious law should be forced on everyone as long as it is from Christian dogma, not Muslim.
TL;dr What changed was an attitude of individuals abiding by their own beliefs to an attitude of Christians needing to influence laws that affect everyone because they know what is best.
