Growing up in a christian (baptist) home, this idea of all sin being equal and forgivable really bothered me.

The guy that stole a loaf of bread is equal in sin to the guy that murdered someone in cold blood. The sin doesn't matter as long as you ask for forgiveness.

Accepting Jesus and being baptized is also seen as a 'new beginning' for your christian life and wipes away all past sin.

I've met a lot of people that were self-admitted "bad people" until they found Jesus. We were supposed to automatically like them now? I could never wrap my head around this. It's a total joke.

Repentance is a really misunderstood concept. It isn’t just saying sorry and trying not to do it again.

It’s a change of heart. It’s becoming a new person, a better person, a different person than the person who originally committed the sin.

Edit: Whoa! Gold and silver. Thanks strangers!

So, here’s the thing. I always thought that if heaven was real, then once you got there you would become a perfect version of yourself, and that in heaven true understanding of others would finally be possible.

So my idea of heavenly forgiveness is that once you are able to truly understand another persons life, you’ll be able to pity the situation (or understand erratic brain chemistry) that made them hurt other people and therefor feel true forgiveness no matter the crime. So our earthly sense of fairness won’t be relevant in a place of true understanding and true forgiveness.

But I’m an atheist, so my thoughts on the concept of heaven are probably all kinds of whack.
