scared/skittish/runaway/feral type cats tend to sit a little forward on their haunches because many things like loud noises scare them and they're always ready to just bolt. You can clearly see that in the first pic. he also looks a little scared/confused.
In the second pic he is clearly flat down on his rear with his back legs tucked up to his front. That's says to me he feels safe and his face is more at ease. Good work fellow excellent human !
