The Trumpers definitely reached full blown cult status when a pandemic was engulfing the world and they thought: this is all just to make Trump look bad.
In hindsight, what I remember most fondly about Obama was the confidence that even if he made mistakes here or there, you could forget he even existed for a time without worrying he was going to burn the country to the ground in the meantime. He never made me wonder if he was actively trying to fuck things up as badly as possible.
And you didn't have to warp your entire sense of patriotism and what America is into blind worship of an individual just to go on supporting the guy. But he also never presented the ultimatum of "Support me or be considered an America-hating scumbag," which is the attitude Trump has taken.
