Is this really a thing? Yes most house and apartment building have balconies here. Is this not normal in other places?

I have a balcony but it is looking into a ghetto alleyway and the power lines are right at eye level. It's nice though because I can hear the Mexican dude with his ice cream cart and ask him to wait up.
