My grandma who went to college in the late 50s always tells me how just working over the summer for 3 months allowed her to pay for her whole year of university including books. You might be able to do that with some community colleges in some cities now but with just tuition but that's it. Costs have definitely increased more than what they would be with simply inflation. It's too much.

How is "I had to suffer so you have to suffer the same amout" ever an argument for anything?

My dad and I have the same degree from the same school 30 years apart. He spent $256/semester and about $25 for books. I spent $2,500/semester and $300-500 for books. He was able to pay for his entire years tuition working part time at a pizza joint over the summer while making less than $3/hour. Even after adjusting for inflation, I’d need to be making 3x minimum wage to be able to pay for my college the same way he did, while also paying for everything else that is much more expensive now than in the 70’s.
