I would imagine that he has been donating to build up a store of blood/blood products in case he needs a transfusion in the future, although I have no idea how long one can safely store blood/blood products

For those asking, the man is not dead, he’s just giving a blood donation. Imagine that. His blood is worth more than actual gold, and he’s donating it. The rarity isn’t the only thing that makes his blood precious either. There’s lots of people who have somewhat rare types of blood, belonging to the Rh-system, and they have to look around quite a lot to find someone with almost identical blood to get a donation that works. However, Rh-null blood can be accepted by all blood types in the Rh-system, making it not only precious, but life saving. If you want to read more I found more info here.

I want to point out that "throughout all of recorded human history" is a silly statement. We've only know about blood types since 1901.
