Wait for a lag in the conversation, and go in for a hug. Make it a long hug, which will make the person feel supported and sufficiently comforted, which should stop the crying. Once the crying stops and the hug is over, you will have entered a new stage in the conversation, which opens up the opportunity for a tone-shift, so you're good to go.

Do it fast, before the crying starts up again, otherwise you'll need to listen at least another five minutes before it's appropriate to try the hug again, and the corn dog will definitely be cold by then.

I once had to tell a friend that her boyfriend died. She was at Chipotle when I called her. She was pretty nearby, so she came over and just cried and cried. All I could do was stare at that bag of Chipotle... a little bit of grease on the bag from the chips...the smell of a nice big burrito....

About 45 minutes in, she tried to pull it together and I said “you should eat something”, and I took it all out and set it up, knowing she would have to offer me half.

Pro move.

Reach the hand with the corndog behind them for a hug, then move your head in and take a bite behind them while hugging. They shouldn't notice the inconsistent size of the corndog
