Wait for a lag in the conversation, and go in for a hug. Make it a long hug, which will make the person feel supported and sufficiently comforted, which should stop the crying. Once the crying stops and the hug is over, you will have entered a new stage in the conversation, which opens up the opportunity for a tone-shift, so you're good to go.

Do it fast, before the crying starts up again, otherwise you'll need to listen at least another five minutes before it's appropriate to try the hug again, and the corn dog will definitely be cold by then.

Reach the hand with the corndog behind them for a hug, then move your head in and take a bite behind them while hugging. They shouldn't notice the inconsistent size of the corndog

I don't know about others, but when I have those moods, I just need you to seem to be listening and occasionally murmur sympathetic sounds between corndog bites. Don't you dare go for personal stories or actual words of comfort just pat my back, and murmur incoherently around the corndog.
