Pete Davidson Might Not Stay on SNL: 'They Think I'm F--king Dumb'

Pete Davidson sure sounds like he’s ready to leave Saturday Night Live.

“I have a lot of conversations with people because it’s a hard thing to do,” Davidson told Charlamagne Tha God in a wide-ranging interview posted Monday when asked whether he might exit the long-running NBC sketch comedy series. “You don’t ever want to pull the trigger too early. Everybody’s always been like, ‘You’ll know when you know, and it’ll be all right.’ I personally think I should be done with that show because they make fun of me on it.”

Davidson missed the first two episodes of SNL Season 45 last fall in part because he was purportedly filming a small role in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. His absence was joked about during the October 5 edition of Weekend Update by co-anchor Colin Jost. “A man who drove his car to a musical festival still cannot remember where he parked his car a week after the show,” Jost said. “Well, we hope you make it back soon, Pete.” As the crowd laughed, an image of Davidson appeared onscreen.

As Davidson told Charlamagne Tha God, “I’m like, cold open, political punchlines. I’m like, ‘Weekend Update’ jokes. When I’m not there, they’ll be like, ‘Huh huh huh, Pete’s a fucking jerk face.’ And you’re like, ‘Whose side are you on?' I have a weird feeling in that building where I don’t know whose team they’re playing for, really—if I’m the joke or I’m in on the joke.”

During his return to Saturday Night Live on October 12, Davidson appeared alongside Jost on “Weekend Update” and referenced the previous episode's dig. “I did hear your little joke about me last week, your gentle little ribbing,” Davidson said. “By the way, Colin, I don't know if you've seen the Joker, but you should start being way nicer to me." As the crowd laughed, Davidson shot back, “I'm serious.” (In Joker, a comedian with mental health issues murders a talk show host who previously mocked him on the air.)

On the show’s December 21 episode, Davidson reappeared on “Weekend Update” only to announce that he was preparing for a “little vacation” that sounded an awful lot like a rehabilitation program: “You know, the kind of vacation where, like, insurance pays for some of it, and they take your phone and shoelaces,” he said on air. “And you have roommates but it still costs like a hundred grand.” Davidson previously attended rehab for mental health issues in 2016; shortly after, he said in 2017, he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. He was absent from the show’s January 25 episode, but appeared in its February 1 and 8 editions.

“As far as everyone else, it's like a cutthroat fucking show. Everyone is trying to get their shit on.

As I understand it, it's always been that way.

Joke aside, they've been good to Pete. He pretty much does what he wants. Honestly think he'd be making a huge mistake walking away.
