Even as a person who has owned mostly manual transmission cars, I will never get this.

If you're an enthusiast it's a good skill to have, mostly because it opens up more options for you. If you can drive a manual transmission, viola, there are now a whole bunch of fun classic cars available to you that were simply never offered with an automatic transmission.

If you're the sort of person who doesn't give a hoot about old cars, then its probably not an important thing for you.

Otherwise the elitism over rowing your own needs to stop.

It's not like most of the world owns manual cars. Not exactly a special skill. In fact untill about 5 years ago you couldn't even get your drivers licence on automatic in my country. Still can't, not for real anyway, because you are only permited to drive automatic while everyone else can drive whatever they please (as in if you got your licence on manual you can totally drive automatic, but not the other way around). In a country where pretty much everyone drives old toyotas.

Owning a manual car is just the default position in the uk (and I believe the rest of Europe aswell) So this has always seemed abit odd. Manual vs auto is just a preference.

And nowadays autos are better for performance/speed, so that argument is moot.
