I used to work for a sign company, along with my wife.
We had the Friedmans Jewelers contract for the region. For that sign, there were four transformers. So if the worst-possible two blew, the sign would say "FRIED JEW". We also had the Waffle House regional contract. It was a standing rule that if the W was out, 24/7 quickest repair was to be done (because it would say AFFLE HOUSE) My wife was on the Friedmans contract. Once an employee called her because the sign was on fire and wanted someone to come out and repair it. After verifying that the sign was literally on fire, literally during the call, she had to argue with the employee to hang up and call 911 for the fire department and then go flip the switch to turn the light off. Not the company I worked for, but the city had a restaurant called FLAP JACKS with a sign like Waffle House - large independent letters. For literally years, the L was out and we couldn't help but laugh at FAP JACKS.
